DOUGLAS CARROLL
Doug was born in Woodfibre (Vancouver) in 1954 and went
to school in Squamish. He got married and had two children.
With his family he lived in Smithers, Kamloops and now
Nanaimo. He has worked as a log builder, commercial
diver and logging foreman. He has also owned and operated
a forestry consulting business and a cattle, horse and
hay ranch. Doug is now the owner of the Bikram Yoga
School in Nanaimo.
Doug trained and studied as a fitness personal trainer.
In addition, he has knowledge in Hanna Somatics, Iyengar
Yoga, Feldenkrais and Akido/Juitso. As far as his hobbies
are concerned, being retired to him means having more
choices. Therefore, he now has the time to teach the
benefits of yoga. Doug also enjoys snowboarding and
skiing in deep powder, galloping his horses across fields,
travelling and hanging out on the beach.
Doug used to play rugby, football and took part in modern
pentathlon. He had a lot of back problems including
pinched nerves and ended up in the hospital for surgery.
Thanks to the tools he found in yoga he was able to
heal his back.

NINA CARROLL
I was born 03/22/81 and grew up in Smithers BC.
I am a teacher at heart. I began teaching
at the age of 14, equestrian and aquatics, and
have loved it all. I took my first Bikram
class in Kamloops around 2003. My parents
went religiously and would try to get me to go
with them. They would show me some postures
at home and I would laugh doing them thinking
they were easy, asking why they had a hard time.
After a few invites and finally going to class,
I found out! I remember my first
class, I kept my composure during the class, dug
really deep, felt amazing after, then went home
and died. Had the best nap of my life, the
awful hide-a-bed was the most comfortable thing
I had ever laid on. I went back and took
my 2nd class a couple days later and the difference
between the 2 classes was crazy. I felt
great after! I had soo much energy I didn't
know what to do. I finally had to admit...
Mom and Dad had been right, this Yoga is incredible. I
relocated to Nanaimo to work reception when the
studio opened January 2006, and after about 8
months of practicing and a few 30 day challenges,
I was off to teacher training in LA.
After my 9 weeks of training I was right back
home in the studio, but not only as a student,
also as a teacher. I see the changes in
others now from a different view, the healing
that goes on in the mind and body as well as emotional
changes. It's incredible. This yoga
has also helped me. I have quit smoking and eat
much healthier. It's not necessarily
by choice, it's my body requesting the good
things. The yoga changes me inside and
out for the better. I am able to deal
with stress better and am not sweating the small
stuff. My ability to focus has
also improved a lot.
Thank you to all my wonderful past, present
and future students for making my job so great,
and being a part of our family at the studio!!

JIM
Jim has been practising Bikram Yoga since the studio
opened in Nanaimo three and a half years ago. He
likes to say that he was hooked after the first beads
of perspiration formed on his forehead and refers to
Bikram Yoga as his “fountain of youth”. Having
suffered severe injuries in an auto accident when he
was younger, he has continually been searching for ways
of keeping fit and overcoming physical challenges for
many years. His first exposure to Hatha yoga was
at a local gym, and once the Bikram studio opened in
Nanaimo, he found the combination of heat and the series
of 26 postures was exactly what his body had been looking
for.
Jim is an avid traveller and has taken Bikram classes
all over the world. Whenever he is on the road
he always searches for the nearest Bikram studio. Having
the consistency of the 26 postures in the same sequence
makes it fun and easy to take classes in various languages.
When he heard about the requirements of Bikram Yoga
teacher training and the gruelling 9 week course, he
was both intimidated and intrigued. He took the
course in Palm Springs, California in the spring of
2009 and found it to be very rewarding. He loves
to share his experience with this style of yoga with
others, and has introduced many of his friends to it. Now
that he is teaching, it has brought his own practice
to a new level. He loves to see what this yoga
has done for others and is always inspired by some of
the miraculous stories shared by other Bikram yoga practitioners.

KARI
Kari is married to firefighter and fellow yogi, Jason Bradley.
They have two children, Jack and Grace. She's lived in
Nanaimo for 30 years. Kari began her practise at the
Bikram studio when it opened in January 2006. She's
never looked back. This yoga has brought her fulfillment
on so many physical and personal levels. She likes to
tell people that the biggest benefit you get from this yoga,
aside from the tremendous healing, is that when you regularly
look at yourself in a mirror for 90 minutes, wearing next
to nothing, you start to become OK with what you see.
Watching the changes is just an added bonus. It's being
ok with your reflection, right now, as it is, that is the
real value.
Physically, the yoga has helped Kari gain and maintain a healthy
body. Personally, it has played a major part in
strengthening family and friendship. After practising for
2 years, she was finally able to convince Jason to start
practising as well. He was instantly hooked and has
maintained a consistent practise ever since.
In the summer of 2008, Kari found herself searching for a
new career path. Teaching this yoga that has brought
so much to her life, seemed like the perfect fit. So
in the spring of 2009, she did the teacher training in Palm
Desert, Calfornia. While leaving her family for 9 weeks
was the most difficult thing she has ever done, she is thrilled
to have completed the training, and to be back teaching
her fellow yogis. Every day she is thankful for the wonderful
support she received while she was away, and continues to
receive now that she is back.
