WHY IS BIKRAM YOGA PERFORMED IN A HEATED ROOM?

When we consider the process of exercise itself, it makes a lot of sense. Any well designed exercise program that incorporates safety, efficiency and optimal results will focus on warming up your bodies before v igorous activity. The temperature of the yoga room is similar to our body's own temperature. In addition to preventing over-stretching, this accelerates the many benefits you will receive from your yoga practice.

IS SWEATING REALLY BENEFICIAL?

Absolutely! Sweating provides an efficient means of detoxification and elimination through the skin - the body's largest organ for expelling toxins from your system. Detoxification is the reason you often feel so clear and 'light' after class. After experimenting with different levels of heat and moisture, we have found that the increased moisture is a great way to help you sweat even more easily!

Experts agree that the optimal humidity when considering lung function for protection against colds, flu and other respiratory problems is around 60-70%. So enjoy the sweat! It is doing you so much good on many different levels!

THE KNOWN BENEFITS OF HEAT!

  • Your body burns fat more effectively. It is common to lose centimeters of shape in a very short time

  • The heat produces a fluid-like stretch allowing for greater range of movement in joints, ligaments and other supporting structures

  • Capillaries dilate in the heat; more effectively oxygenating the tissues, muscles, glands and organs and, just as importantly, helping in the removal of waste products from every cell

  • Your peripheral circulation improves

  • Your metabolism speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids

  • You benefit from a strengthening of willpower, self-control, concentration and determination in this challenging environment
